Hello!

Here's the update for the week:

*Volunteers- Since we have our Valentine's Party and our President's Day Assembly this week, we will skip the reading volunteers. We will resume next week.

*President's Day Assembly- Third grades are in charge of the assembly, but since the space in the gym is limited, we will have a program specifically for parents in a couple of months. All of the songs they are sharing at the assembly will be performed in that program.

*President's Holiday- No School- Monday, February 20th.

*Vocabulary- Since I only got out 2 of the vocabulary words last week, we will follow up with the other 2 this week. The test will be on Friday. Next week we will not have vocabulary words due to the shortened week.

*Spelling Bee- The South Elementary Spelling Bee will be held on Monday, February 27th. This week each individual class will be having their own in-class assessment to choose 2 representatives. I understand that you should be able to access your child's spelling practice words on the PTA website.

*Class Party- Tomorrow our Valentines Party will be at 2:30. The details for the party are listed below, in last week's newsletter.

Newsletter 2/6 - 2/10

Well, the weeks are flying by and we're already well into February. The academic schedule continues to stay basically the same. Let me fill you in on a couple items of interest:

*Keyboarding- The students are progressing through the keyboarding lessons. Hang on for 2 1/2 more weeks and we'll be all done with the keyboarding assignments. Thank you for encouraging your child to practice at home. By the end of the year, my hope is to have them typing their own Four Square Writing assignment. Hopefully I am successful in persuading my students to approach keyboarding with diligence, as this will be an important skill they'll use throughout their lives.

*Cursive- We are completing the cursive writing slowly, but surely.

*Math- We're finishing up the chapter on fractions and moving right into money and decimals. We will have the students stay with their current teacher for this chapter. In addition, the students are completing their weekly Mountain Math assignments.

*Daily 5- In the writing portion of Daily 5, the students are completing a writing on the prompt "If I won a thousand dollars"
-Also to enhance our Daily 5 curriculum, our students have an opportunity to be mentors to our Extended Day Kindergarten class. On Wednesdays, our 3rd graders are helping the younger students complete writing and literacy assignments. They seem to really enjoy this exchange and are greatly benefitting from being 'Teachers'!

Just a look ahead to the Valentines Party next Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.:

The students are welcome to bring Valentines to school. If they decide to do this, they need to have one for each student in the class. Our class has 26 students. Here are the names:

We're back for another week! Not too much out of the ordinary going on. Just please remember the McDonalds fundraiser tonight from 6 - 8 p.m. This is a great fundraiser and helps put money back into the classroom.

*Reading Calendars are due on Wednesday. I will accept them up until Friday, Feb. 3rd.

Newsletter 1/23 - 1/27

Our schedule this week follows the schedule from last week. Here are just a few things to be made aware of:
1- This week we are collecting food for the SUU Athletes food drive. If you are able to donate non-perishable food items, it would be greatly appreciated. If our class collects the most food throughout the week, we will be awarded with an ice cream party.

2- Times Tables- Still working on 12's. Starting next week, we will start pulling students to see which additional times tables they already know. I would like the students to really get the 12's down, so in the meantime, please review those at home.

3- Math- Our math groups changed today. The new chapter is on fractions. I'm hoping that you were able to see the results of the symmetry test. The whole class did very well!

4- Next week will be our McDonalds fundraiser on Monday, Jan. 30th. This is a wonderful event that brings in a large amount of money for our school. Please support this fundraiser if you are able. I will be a on the job from 6:30- 7:00. :)

5- Class Store- Most of you are aware that I set up a class store every Friday. During the week, the students are awarded "sticks" as they accomplish goals and display appropriate behaviors. The sticks are exchanged for items from the store. I have now added a requirement to shop on Fridays. Each student that has a current 70% or higher on their grades will be eligible to shop. I'm hoping that this will encourage the students to keep up on their reading, homework and school assignments. If you have questions about this policy, please let me know. Also, we are always open for donations. Items can range from little candies to pencil boxes etc. Even old toys from home that you no longer have a need for are welcome.

Better Late Than Never!

Hello! Since I'm so late getting this newsletter out, this newsletter will cover the end of this week and next. Here is a highlight of our schedule:

*Keyboarding- We are keyboarding on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Watch for keyboarding homework on these days along with the regular homework. Remember, it is not necessary for the students to complete the whole typing sheet. To meet the requirement, they need to practice 10 minutes. If they are speedy and finish early, they can just repeat it until their 10 minutes is up. A printed copy is not necessary, just a signature from a parent.

*Math- In Math Groups we have just finished Chapter 10 on Solids and Shapes. We will stay in our groups for one more chapter. Chapter 11 is on Congruence and Symmetry.
We are now working on Mountain Math once a week. It is a great review of the 3rd grade curriculum.

*Daily 5- We are continuing our Read-To-Self, Read with Someone, Word Work, Listening and Writing. An emphasis is being placed on fluency, since that is the common stumbling block for the majority of students.

*Interventions- Continuing our regular schedule.

*Writing- We are starting our Four Square Writing for the month of January. I'm excited to see the growth in each student as the year goes on.

**Grades will be sent home at the beginning of next week. Along with grades, a current reading level will be included. Please sign and return once you have reviewed them.

I really wanted to thank you all for the wonderful cards, treats and gifts that were sent in. I normally would have sent thank-you notes, but was unable to due to the passing of my father-in-law. Your sentiments were much appreciated along with the hugs and kind words from your children!

Newsletter 1/2 - 1/6

WELCOME BACK! I had a wonderful vacation, but am so ready to be back with my students. I hope you all had a great and relaxing holiday too!

Weekly Highlights:

*Reading Helpers- We will have you start next week. (Tues. 1/10 & Thurs. 1/12)

*Math- We separated into new math groups today. We are studying Chapter 10, Solids and Shapes
We also started our Mountain Math board today, which covers the 3rd Grade Math Core Standards.

*Times Tables- We're still busy passing off 12's. Next will be 9's.

*Unit of Study- We are starting keyboarding today. The students will be introduced to the parts of the computer and will orient themselves to the keyboard. No homework for the first 2 lessons. When you see a homework sheet (should be on Thursday), just have your child practice the typing for 10-15 minutes only. It's ok if they don't finish the whole sheet. Also, just sign the paper and have your child return it. There is no need to print out the work.

*Interventions (Literacy)- Picking back up with Dictionaries (Buddy Spelling), Daily 5, Phonics, Dictation, Mountain Language & Guided Reading

*Vocabulary & Spelling- Both sets of words have been sent home today. If your child missed the last spelling test, please give them the test at home. The words are listed in the right hand margin. If they are sent in, I will record your child's score.

**December Reading records are due. Please have them sent in by Wednesday. Thank You!

Hello! We're in for a fun-filled week! Just a couple of items to note: First, we will be having homework and spelling as usual this week. Second, we won't have new vocabulary words or a test this week. Third, grades have been sent home. If you have questions about individual assignments, you can log into your child's Powerschool account or contact me.
Last, our party will be on Friday at 2:30. You can find the food assignments down below in the newsletter from last week. I will try to email you individually for a reminder.

Here is the Sing-Around-the-Tree Schedule:

*Also, my daughter is getting her tonsils out on Thursday. I will not be at school that day, but plan to be back on Friday. Mrs. Boggess will be the substitute.

Newsletter 12/5 - 12/9

Here is an update for the week:

Vocabulary- Four new cards were sent home today. Please have your child put them in alphabetical order on their metal ring. The cards should be used to study for the test each week. The test will include the four words from last week.

Writing- The students are writing winter stories. They have shown marked improvement on the Four Square writing method. The focus of the writing lesson this week is "elaboration". The students are expected to have a topic sentence, supporting details, examples and extensions in each paragraph. I'm so pleased with the students' work and I think you will be too!

Math- We have organized new math groups. The new chapter is focusing on patterns and relationships. The results from the chapter test on division will be sent home shortly.
Times Tables- This week we will finish up 12's and move onto 9's.

Unit Study- Our next unit study is keyboarding. We will begin keyboarding right after Christmas vacation. The students should be prepared to do a little keyboarding homework during the months of January and February.

Music- Mrs. Leavitt is having the students share their talents this week in music. Our 2 music times this week are: Tuesday @ 10:30 and Friday @ 9:00. You are welcome to come in and watch if you would like.

Art- We have just finished an oil pastel and tissue paper poinsettia art project. Half of the artwork will be displayed at the district office and half will be on our class bulletin at school. South Elementary third graders are wonderful artists!

Looking forward:
Next week- We will have daily singing around the Christmas tree in the gym. I will include the specific times in the newsletter next week.

Christmas Party- The party will be held on the last day of school before the break, during the last hour of the school day.

Newsletter 11/28- 12/2

Welcome back after a great holiday!

We are jumping right back into school. Everything will be back to normal, with our spelling test on Friday. * In addition, we have started our vocabulary word study. Your child should be bringing home a metal ring holding four vocabulary cards. The cards should be placed in alphabetic order and can be used to study for our Friday tests. Every Monday, four more cards will be sent home and should be placed on the ring in alphabetic order. On Fridays we will test the new words, along with the old ones. The vocabulary cards should stay at home.

*Parent Volunteers- Thank you so much for your help each week. We will plan to have you come in this week and next. That last week of school before Christmas gets crazy, so don't worry about coming that week.

Welcome Back for another busy week! New concepts and skills are being introduced everyday, and I'm happy to report that each child is progressing very well!

Here is an update of the happenings during the last week or two:

Math- We completed our chapter on Multiplication, although, we will be working on this concept all year. Thank you for working with your children to correct the missed items on their test. I feel that this is a great strategy to reteach skills that were missed. The new chapter we are studying is Division.
Times Tables- Most of the students passed off their 10 times tables last week. This week, our focus will be on 11's.

Reading- More Daily 5 strategies are being taught. Last week the students learned the procedures involved with reading to a partner. This strategy specifically addresses fluency.
Writing Project- Trickster Stories- Completed by cooperative learning groups

Unit Study- Health is the focus of our unit study, which fits in nicely with our Healthy Lifestyles week! The students are still participating in rotations with the other third grade teachers. Here are the topics each teacher is addressing:
Mrs. Segler- Healthy eating habits based on the Food Guide MyPlate
Mr. Shirley- Exercise/Blood and Circulation
Miss Yardley- Safety
Mrs. Holmes- Hygiene

*This week is Healthy Lifestyles Week. Hopefully, you received home a flyer outlining the week's activities. You will also be receiving a walk-a-thon paper today. This is a great way to earn money for our classes.

I hope you had a wonderful fall break. It is nice to have a break, but so good to get back into a schedule! I look forward to the time I spend with your children at school. They are wonderful!

This week is Red Ribbon Week. The students will be involved in activities that will encourage them to live a drug-free life. Here are the daily themes for the week:

**Friday is the annual can food drive to benefit the Care and Share, food will be collected as students arrive at school and delivered to the Care and Share @ 9:30 a.m.

Hello! Just a couple of items for this short week of school.

*Spelling- No spelling this week. I will post next week's words in the right hand margin of this blog.

*Math Groups- We have switched math groups and are now working on Chapter 5. (Multiplication)

*Times Tables- We will be passing off 5 times tables next. We will begin after the break.

*Writing- We're finishing up our Iron County writing. Next, we will begin our "Trickster" Stories.

*Reflections- Our theme this year is "Diversity Means........." This is a time where students are able to express their feelings on this topic by drawing pictures, writing stories or poems, making sculptures, taking pictures with your camera and more! Turn them into be judged. Rules and entry forms can be found in the office or at www.utahpta.org/reflections
All entries are due by Friday, November 4th. We would love to have everyone participate!

Newsletter 10/10- 10/14

We're back for another week! Again, I enjoyed SEP week and meeting with you all! We had 100 percent attendance!

Important Items:

*Volunteer Reading Helpers will begin the Tuesday we get back from Fall Break. For the Tuesday people, that will be on Oct. 25th. For the Thursday helpers, it will be on Oct. 27th. The time is from 8:50- 9:30.

*Times Tables- We're passing off 2's this week. I'm sorry this process is taking longer than I anticipated. Next week, the plan is to pass-off 5's.

*Spelling- I have never had a class completely ace the spelling tests like this year. All but two of the students got 100%. The two that didn't only missed one. Unbelievable!! Thank you for diligently practicing at home.

*Unit Study- We have completed our Iron County unit, with the exception of the Iron County writing. The new unit we will be studying is Living/Non-living things. Rotations will start today.

*Iron County Writing- The Iron County Writing is due this Friday. It is an assignment that we have worked on in class. If your child is struggling on this project, I may be sending the assignment home to be finished. It will mostly be completed in class, so it won't take too much time to finish at home. Eight students have completed their writing and have presented it to the class and to Mr. Oldroyd. This is an opportunity for the students to practice reading for fluency.

Newsletter 9/26- 9/30

We had a busy and fun-filled week. The field trip was fantastic and the students seemed to learn a lot about the settling of Iron County. We will continue the Iron County Unit rotations throughout the next week and a half, concluding with a test next Thursday. The students will be bringing a study guide home at the beginning of next week. We will also begin a persuasive writing project, "Why everyone should live in Iron County".

Times Tables- All of the class has passed of 0 & 1 times tables. This week we will work on the 2's. Please take a couple of minutes every night reviewing the times tables.
Reading minutes- Reading minutes for September are due at the beginning of next week. There will be 525 points possible, which equals 525 minutes of reading. The bulk of each child's grade depends on reading minutes.

The Braithwaite Gallery is presenting an art lesson to our students on Friday. The current study is of Russian art. I am unsure of the specifics of the lesson, but will give you more details as I find them out.

SEP's- Next week is SEP week. I have sent home a scheduled time for each child. Please look it over and send it back with your response. The sooner I get them back, the easier it is to accommodate schedules. Thank You! I look forward to meeting with you next week!

Hello! I hope your extended weekend was enjoyable! We accomplished so much last week before the holiday weekend. Here is a review:

*Daily 5 - Read-to-Self- The class built up their reading stamina to 14 minutes. Along the way, the students are practicing the skills that good readers use. They also recognize several reasons why reading is important. We will set a goal this week to "up" our minutes to at least 20.

*Writing- I am impressed with the quality of writing I am already getting from my students. We have jumped right in to our "Four Square" writing and I am already getting finished products that are awesome. Through this process the students are going through the 6+1 traits of writing. They are learning to add details to their writing and are editing their own work. You will be so amazed when we meet for SEP's!

*Math Groups- We finished up our chapter on "Numeration". New math groups will be formed for Tuesday. The new chapter is "Adding Whole Numbers". (Concentrating on regrouping.)

*Unit Study- We were able make it to two "Heat & Light" stations last week.

*Benchmarks- Mrs. Murray and her teachers have finished benchmarking our class. I now have a current reading level for each student that I will be sharing with you at SEP's. If possible, I will get you the results sooner by email. If you are worried about this information, please let me know. I will get yours to you sooner, rather than later.

*Life Skills- Our lifeskill this week is "Peacemaking". The students attended the first Marvin & Jessie play of the year last Thursday. It reinforced strategies to avoid conflicts and become a peacemaker.

Here's what we've got going for this week:
*August Reading due- I would like to have the reading records collected by Wednesday.

*Times Table Pass-offs- I will be calling the students back this week to pass off 0's, 1's & 2's. Next week we will pass-off 5's.

*Unit Study- We will finish our last 2 rotations this week.

*Writing- We will complete our first writing assignment by the end of the week. This score will be recorded on Power school by next Monday.

*Daily 5- Continue "Read to Self"- Lesson on "Good Fit Books" and how the students can pick books that are appropriate for their reading level.

*Math Groups- New groups on Tuesday. New chapter on "Adding Whole Numbers". You will be seeing the results for the last chapter test in the next couple of days. When I send the test home, you have the choice to work through the missed problems with your child to help improve their score if needed.

*Spelling- Usual test on Friday (New list will be posted on Tuesday, when I get to school:)

*Remember Picture day this Friday, the 9th

This week we are starting our spelling packets. You should be receiving spelling list #1 today. If your child ever misses a Friday, you can go ahead and give them the spelling test at home. Send it in with your child the next week and I will record their score. If you lose the spelling list, you can find the words in the right margin of this blog. We will not be starting vocabulary for about a month.
Thank you for the consistency I'm seeing with the homework. Almost everyone is getting their homework turned in. Please make a habit of checking Powerschool. Grades are updated daily.
*Times Tables- We have worked on 0's, 1's & 2's in class. We will have pass-offs for these times tables during the next week. A little review at home will be really helpful.
*Unit Study- Last week, we started our unit on Heat & Light. All of the third graders met to make s'mores. We were not able to conduct our Hot air balloon experiment because there was not enough sunlight at the end of last week. Hopefully this week, we will find a time to do that. Each third grade teacher will be rotating through all of the classes over a course of four days throughout the next week and a half. The students will be immersed in "Heat & Light" science curriculum as they rotate. This is a great chance for students to get to know the other teachers and benefit from the different teaching styles.

Hello Parents!
Sorry the Monday newsletter is coming out on Tuesday this week. I'm thrilled to be back with the students. We are jumping into the curriculum and it's great to be covering ground right off the bat!
This week we have started our Bell Work, which is our ADD and Editing papers. I will send them home occasionally so you can see what we are doing in class. As you have noticed, we have also started our Daily Math/Lang. homework sheets. Today I should have received the first homework back. If you weren't able to get it done last night, no worries, you have 2 days to get it back. We will start our spelling packets next week. Be watching for a spelling list next Monday. We will not begin vocabulary until the end of September.

I'm so happy to be starting a new school year with such a wonderful class! Up until this point, we have 26 students- 15 girls and 11 boys. Hopefully you received my letter in the mail and are prepared to join me at Back to School Night on August 16th.

Newsletter 5/9 - 5/13

We've just about wrapped up our testing. It seems like the students are doing very well on both reading and math. Thank you for sending them prepared!
Looking Ahead:
*Field Day- I have received one volunteer for field day for the afternoon. If you could possibly help in the morning of May 23rd, please let me know.

*Battle of the Books- Next week we will be holding our first annual "Battle of the Books". Throughout the week we will have individual 3rd grade classroom battles, with our winning team competing with the other 3rd grade classes.

*Reading Celebration- Our read-a-thon has started, culminating with the Reading Celebration on May 20th. In order for the students to qualify for this activity, they need to do 2 of the following items:
   1. Consistently read and turn in their class reading record. (At least 25 min. a night)
   2. Consistently read a take-home library book.
   3. Participate in the "Battle of the Books".

*Classwork/Homework-
We have finished up our spelling lists for the year- Yeah! We will still continue with our vocabulary until next week. Our vocabulary test will not be this Friday- (I realized I forgot to hand out the cards from last week.) Our last test is next Friday, May 20th. This Friday (May 13th) will be the last day for homework. Please keep your kids reading though- Thank You!

Moon Unit- We are introducing the "Moon Unit" this week. Some students have expressed an interest in completing a "Moon Report" for extra credit. Any creative idea will be accepted- Each student that does this will have some time to present their findings to the class. Friday, May 20th will be the last day for the moon unit.

*Class Party- Friday, May 13th- Our students have worked hard to earn a class party. We have scheduled it on Friday (contingent upon their behavior in the computer lab tomorrow). They are allowed to wear their pajamas and bring pillows and blankets. I am supplying root beer floats. Some of the students have volunteered to bring items. This is not an obligation on your part. If you would like to though, you are welcome. We try to stick to the "store wrapped" rule.

Thank you so much for supporting our Easter egg hunt. We had a fabulous time and really enjoyed the treats that were sent in!

Testing is right around the corner. It is imperative that all of our students are in attendance. If it is necessary for your child to be gone, please let me know ahead of time so I can make arrangments.

Hello!
Before I continue with news items for the week, I would like to congratulate the two spelling bee champs from our class. The two students that represented our class were Jacob Reed and Brianne Heap. They both did a spectacular job and made us proud!! Thanks to everyone who studied and made an effort to participate in this year's spelling bee. They're all superstars in my eyes!

I would also like to mention that End-of-Level testing is quickly approaching. Attendance is crucial at this point in the year. Please do what you can to ensure your student is in class everyday. Here is a schedule of the testing (and practice test) dates for our class:

*Parent Volunteers: I can't thank you enough for the help and care you have given our students! The students have looked forward to reading with you each week. With End-of-Levels approaching, we will have you come this week and one week after Spring Break. We will be doing a lot of reviewing with the students and the schedule is very inconsistent. Thank you again for your help!

Hello Parents! We are now in the thick of our busy schedule.
Here are the important dates and times to remember:

TOMORROW, March 22nd- 3rd Grade program @ 2:00 in the school gym. All friends and relatives are invited. The program will last about 45 minutes.

FRIDAY- March 25th- Science Fair

MONDAY- March 28th - Science Fair Assembly 2:00 p.m.
*NOTE- The third grade classes will be going on the Farm Field trip in the afternoon on this same day. We have decided to have a special award program just for the third grade students in the morning at 10:00. The tentative plan is to have it in my classroom. I'll let you know if that changes.

MONDAY- March 28th- Farm Fieldtrip- We will be leaving right after lunch. The farm presentation is in Cedar City, but the students will be riding a bus.

FRIDAY- April 1st- Spelling Bee (More details will be coming home)

Before I list our schedule I would like to let you know about our 3rd grade program. It will be held on Tuesday, March 22 @ 2:00 in our school gym. This will be a repeat of our Presidents Day Assembly that we performed for the school in February. Please mark this date on your calendar.

Hello! Welcome back to another week. Thank you for your patience with my lack of communication last week while I attended to my four, yes FOUR, sick kids at home.
Here is an update in our subject areas:

Social Studies/Science- We just finished up our Geography unit with Miss Savage and are now starting Health. This will include studying the food pyramid, healthy lifestyles and body systems. We will continue this unit for the next couple of weeks.

Math- We are getting ready to test the students on patterns and will move to solids and shapes by the end of the week. The students are also working on Mountain Math at least once a week.
Times Tables- We will continue to pass the students off on their times tables. I will give you an update at SEP's regarding where your child is at.

Daily 5/L.A.- We will continue working on independent reading, writing and guided reading. We will also be working on partner reading. We are also working on Mountain Language each week along with a language lesson.

Keyboarding- Although we are finished with the keyboarding lessons, we will continue to work on keyboarding in the lab once a week.

Thank you all for the supplies you sent for our party last week. The students had a good time, and it was a fun end to the week.
For spelling this week, I made a mistake and handed out list #23 instead of #22. I'm going to have the students go ahead with #23 since they have already started it. I apologize for the confusion!!

*FYI- The third grade classes are in charge of the Presidents' Day Assembly on Friday. Since the gym will not accommodate the student body along with parents, we will be performing the same songs for parents in a program at the end of April or first of May.

It has been a privilege having our student teacher, Miss Savage, in our class for the last few weeks. She will be with us for three more weeks before she moves on to Mrs. Sherratt's class. She has been a huge asset to our class and has enabled me to have more one-on-one time with my students. She will be starting a unit on geography during the next few days.

Friday is the end of the term. I will be sending Progress Reports home on that day. Please send in any reading minutes that have been missed along the way. I'm also noticing that quite a few students are not finishing their spelling packets. Spelling packets are kept at school in each student's desk. I always let the students know on Friday who is missing a packet. If you notice a zero on a spelling packet, please remind your child to get it from their "Stay at School Folder". They are welcome to take them home to finish them. Usually I only have one or two extra copies of the spelling packet, so I really encourage the students to keep track of them.

*Times Tables- Starting next week, I will be passing off 3's and 4's. After that, we will finish up with 6's, 7's & 8's. The students may still pass off any times tables they are missing.

Welcome back to school after a well deserved break. I hope you all had a wonderful vacation! Since it's been awhile since I have touched base with you, I thought I'd send the newsletter early to get you up to speed.
I'm sure your child has told you about "Sharing Time" after Christmas. I promised the students they could have a special "Show and Tell" time. I have designated this coming Tuesday (Jan. 4th) at 3:00 for girls sharing. The boys will get their turn on Wednesday (Jan. 5th) at 1:00. Please have them choose ONE favorite item that they would like to show the class. The students will be allowed to keep their sharing in my office if they choose.

Battle of the Books- Some information was sent home before Christmas about our "Battle of the Books". This is a reading challenge supported by the PTA to encourage students in their reading. A list of third grade books was sent home. Since there are limited copies of each book, I will be splitting the students into groups so they can assign out particular books for each child to read. Your child does not have to read all of the books, but the more they read, the better prepared they will be when we "Battle" the other classes. The PTA has helped purchase several copies of each book, so we hopefully will have enough to keep each child busy. I'm planning to send you more info. on this subject during the week.

Keyboarding- We will begin keyboarding this week. There will be 20 lessons altogether. Once we get to the 4th lesson, I will be sending homework home. This homework will be time consuming at the beginning. Please just have your child practice 10 to 15 minutes, even if they don't finish. They will need to concentrate on the proper keyboarding positions as much as anything.

Spelling & Vocabulary- Spelling words will be sent home as well as 2 more vocabulary words. The spelling test will be on Friday and the Vocabulary test will be next Friday.

Home Reading- Home reading is more important than ever at this point. Once we get each child in their "Battle of the Books" book, they should be getting at least their 25 minutes done. I will send home a January reading log on Monday.

The amount of work we are trying to accomplish may seem overwhelming. Please just do the best you can to encourage your child to complete their work. Starting in January is our best learning time of the year. Attendance is very crucial as we teach students in preparation for End-of-Levels.

Reading Volunteers- We will begin reading volunteers in one week (Jan. 11th). Thanks for all of your help!

Here we are, the last of school before Christmas break! We are going to hold on to our regular schedule as much as possible. On Friday we will have our party the last hour of the day. The list for the party is on the last blog entry below.

Vocabulary & Spelling- Spelling Test #15 will be given on Friday. No vocabulary this week. We will resume after the holidays.

Progress Reports will be sent home on Tuesday. Please look them over and sign that you have seen them.

Just a little heads-up following the holidays. We will be getting a student teacher on January 10th. Her name is Loni Savage and she will be a great addition to our class. We will also start keyboarding after the new year.

I hardly can believe there are only two more weeks until Christmas vacation! We will be working hard in class up until the 17th. On that Friday, we will be having our Christmas Party the last hour of the day. We also have a "Sing-Around-the Tree" everyday next week. The schedule is in the right margin on this blog.

I will also list the items for the Christmas Party that several people signed up for at the first of the year. I also must say a big "Thank YOU!" to all of you who brought items for the Thanksgiving party. The students were thrilled and I appreciate your generosity very much!

Two new vocabulary words will be sent home on Tuesday. The test will be this Friday. All words that will be on the test are in the right margin. Spelling test as usual on Friday.

Times Tables- All together the students should have 1's, 2's, 3's, 5's, 9's, 10's, 11's & 12's passed off. At the end of this week I will be sending progress reports home that will show you where your child is at. The 4's, 6's, 7's & 8's will be put on 3rd quarter grades.

I can't believe our Thanksgiving break is quickly approaching! We are working hard in class and making a lot of progress.

Vocabulary: This week, instead of sending four new vocabulary words home, I am going to let the students have one more week practicing the old words. The same twelve words will be on the test on Friday.

Times Tables: I am currently passing off students on their 12's, 3's & 4's. I will be sending an updated list showing you which times tables your child still needs to pass off.

Math Groups: We are finishing up our unit on addition which has included concepts such as rounding, estimating & adding 2, 3 & 4 digit numbers. New Math groups will begin on Thursday. The new unit concentrates on Subtraction.

Daily 5 Writing- We are starting our Daily 5 Thanksgiving stories. The students will be using the writing process to complete this assignment. They are becoming great writers!

Book Orders: If you are still interested in ordering books, I will sending the order in on Wednesday. (That's one day earlier than I previously stated.) You will find some good deals in the book order that are great for gift-giving.

Thanksgiving Party: Our party will be on Tuesday, November 23 during the last hour of the day. The following is a list of those who signed up at the beginning of the year. There are still some items that aren't covered yet. If you are willing to bring one of those items, let me know. Thanks!

Hello! We are having fun with "Green Ribbon" week. This is a great opportunity for the students to learn about healthy lifestyles. Everyday the students can get prizes if they wear their bracelet along with the color of the day.

There are a couple of items that need to be brought to your attention since last week.
First, we are starting our vocabulary words this week. Your child will be bringing 4 cards home on Tuesday or Wednesday. The cards should be kept on the book ring that they will bring home. Our first test will be on Friday, Oct. 29th. After that, I will be sending 4 new cards home on Mondays with the spelling list. Please have your child place the cards on the book ring in alphabetical order. They may use these cards to study for the tests every Friday. The students will need to know the word and the definition.
Second, Mrs. Coonen will be starting her "Picnic Math" lunch club. The following is a description of this activity:

Introducing…Picnic Math!
What is Picnic Math?! In an attempt to have all of our students reach mastery level performance with the third grade math standards in the Utah Core, we are introducing Picnic Math. Picnic Math is a fluid math group that meets three times per week at lunchtime. Students will qualify to participate based on performance in math class and on assessments. Those students who are struggling with current concepts will come to lunch in the Resource room for a little extra practice over lunch. As mentioned before, the group is fluid; students will not know if they are coming until the morning of the group. If you have any questions, or if you do NOT want your child to ever participate, please call your student's teacher or Sharon Coonen: 586-2850.

Newsletter 10/11- 10/20

Hello! Thank you all for attending SEP's last week. We had 100% attendance!! I not only have wonderful students, but wonderful & supportive parents. Thank You!!
This newsletter will give information for the next 2 weeks. (The week following is our Fall break and we only have 3 days of school. School resumes the following Tuesday, Oct 26th).

-Classroom Volunteers- I'm sorry to confuse the volunteer schedule, but this should be the final word on the subject. I was going to start the volunteers on Oct. 19th. I still plan to do that if you are signed up for Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Since we won't have school that week on Thursday, the Thursday volunteers have the option to start this coming Thursday (Oct. 14th). If that doesn't work with your schedule, just plan on starting on Thursday Oct. 28th.

Math Groups- We are finishing our unit on Numeration and will begin our next unit on Addition. New groups will be formed and will be placed on Tuesday. Our new "Envision" math program has been awesome! The students have loved the technology aspects and are learning a lot.

String Art- We started string art last Friday. I must admit, it was a bit of a hair-raising experience (It always is!). Now that they're getting the hang of it, I'm looking forward to continuing this project on through the next week.

Interventions- Our literacy intervention groups will start this week. They will run from 9:30- 10:00. This period of time will be devoted to improving reading/literacy skills.

Tuesday's Field Trip- We will be leaving the school at 9:00 a.m. We will have school lunches ready and loaded on the bus. Please send a jacket with your student. It normally is a bit chilly every year on this Field Trip. The students won't need to bring snacks or water bottles. Most places that we visit will have water fountains. The lunches are also very filling and will get them by until we get back. For those parents driving to meet us, our first stop will be at the Old Rock Church. At that point, the 3 classes will split up and rotate through the Old Rock Museum, the Jesse Smith home and the Priddy Meeks Home. (The Priddy Meeks home requires a bus ride back and forth.) At approximately 11:00, we will ride to the Heritage Park to eat lunch. We will finish up at the cemetary. The class will be back to the school by 3:00.

We're in the middle of a busy SEP week. I am enjoying the meetings I have had so far and look forward to more throughout the week!
Just a few important notes:
*Room volunteers are scheduled to start next week. I think I will push that back one more week because of our fieldtrip on Tuesday. The list of the schedule is in the margin to the right.
*Times Tables- The students should be practicing their 3's, 9's, & 12's. We are continually working on times table pass-offs in class. (A big thank-you to Bobbi Obering!) Most students have their 0's, 1's, 2's & 5's passed off. We are working our way on up, so you might need to be a little patient with us. :) The practice at home is making a big difference. Thank You!!
*Next Tuesday will be our Fieldtrip to Parowan. We will try leaving the school as close to 9:00 a.m. as we can. We encourage the students to eat a school packed lunch that day if possible. If your child's lunch account is current, you don't need to worry about doing anything.

Hello! Welcome back for another week! SEP week is next week and school will be excused at 2:30 everyday(including Wednesday). I sent a slip in your child's folder last week with the date and time for your appointment. If you haven't already, please send the slip back indicating whether or not you can keep the appointment.
I am really enjoying my students. They are working hard and learning so much! Thank you for your help at home on times tables. They are quickly passing them off.
The students have been asking about our first field trip. We are planning to go to Parowan to see the Old Rock Church, the Purdy Meeks home and the Cemetary on Oct. 12th. We will also be eating lunch at the Heritage Park. This is a wonderful field trip and will go along with our study of Iron County. Since seating is limited on the bus, we won't be able to take extra volunteers along. We will have some classroom aides going with us and there should be plenty of supervision. Parents are welcome to drive over and meet us there if desired.
The question of "Sharing Time" has come up quite a bit in class. In third grade sharing time is limited because of the amount of topics covered throughout the year. I have told the students they can bring a sharing item on their "Student of the Week" week. We will also have one sharing day after the Christmas holidays.

SEP week is approaching quickly and you will be receiving a time and a date for your appointment in the next week. The teachers carefully schedule the appointments to accommodate those who have more than one child at the school. If possible, please keep your scheduled appointment. If the time is impossible for you to keep, please send the slip back and we will find a better time for you.
I am planning to send home progress reports by the end of the week. For the most part, the students are keeping up very well. The only problem I've noted so far is reading minutes that haven't been turned in. The reading minutes make up the bulk of the grade. I will accept reading minutes the next couple of days to catch the students up.
Fluoride rinse started today. I have a list of students posted on my classroom door that have permission to participate in this activity. If you would like to have your child included on this list, please send in a note that gives your child permission to participate.
We are lucky to have one of our classroom mothers coming in to pass the students off on their times tables. Please continue to practice these times tables at home. Our next times table lesson will be focused on the 12's. After that, we will pick up the numbers we missed the first time through. (3's, 4's, 6's, 7's, & 8's).
Today we are starting our Take-Home lending library. When your child is finished reading their book, please mark it off and initial it before sending it back to school. The children are reminded to pick up their books at the end of class, but many forget. If you don't see one come home, please remind your child to pick it up at school. I will remind them to do this also.

Welcome Back!! We're up for another great week in third grade!!
Reading volunteers will be starting next month. (About the 2nd week in October). I will send home a reminder a week before.
We're having a lot of fun with our "Student of the Week". Just to remind you how this works: Each student has been assigned a "week". I will send home the information sheet a week before. This replaces our birthday celebrations and really doesn't coincide with their birthday. (But, if your child has a birthday during the school year, you are welcome to send in birthday treats.) When your child has their "week", they will be the leader everyday and help with special assignments. They are also welcome to bring a treat on Friday if you would like. I have a calendar in the back of the classroom that your child can check to see if their week is approaching.

Welcome back after a long weekend. I hoped you relaxed and enjoyed it!
The students seem to be getting into the "groove" of 3rd grade. Thank you for reminding your child to get their reading records turned in(Mondays) and their homework finished each night.
We are currently working on the following times tables: 0's, 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's & 11's. Please review these with your children at home. We are making some flash cards in class that the students will eventually bring home to use as practice. We will be starting pass-offs in the next week. We will start with 0's and work on up. We are also pressing forward with our new "Envision" math program. We now have so many resources available through this program, that it is taking the teachers a little time to work through it. Please watch for an introductory letter that will be coming home in your child's folder.
Our classroom also received a new projector and "Mimio" system (similar to a Smart Board). It is amazing how this new technology is enhancing our curriculum!

Hello Parents!

We have made it through our first week of school. The kids are adjusting to our schedule and are doing very well. I'm so thrilled with this new class. They are delightful children!!
So far, we have been working on Spelling, Daily 5 (Read to Self), Math including Times tables and cursive writing. We are going to begin our first science unit this week which is "Heat & Light".
We have also started our prep. classes which include Music, P.E., & Library. Check in the right hand column to see the schedule for these classes.
*Homework*
As you have noticed, homework has started this week. You can expect to see homework sheets come home Monday-Thursday. Also, please remember reading minutes. The students need to read 25 min. per night/ 5 nights a week to receive full credit. Please return reading records each Monday. Thank You!!

I'm so happy to be back to school and to be working with such wonderful students!! This is the spot to check for class information throughout the year.
Back-To-School Night will be held on Tuesday, August 17th at 6:00(for 1st-3rd Grades). The General Meeting will be held in the Gym at 6:30. If you are unable to make it at this time, please stop by our classroom when you can to pick up the information that will be given. If not, I will send it home with your student on the first day of school.

I am hoping to keep somewhat of a regular schedule during the last 2 weeks of school. We will continue to do Daily 5, Times Tables, Mountain Math/Language, & Health. This Friday, May 21st, will be our last vocabulary test.
The students earned their party points and will be having a party on Wed. May 19th. They may wear pajamas that day and bring a blanket, stuffed animal, doll etc. They may also bring a treat for the class if they want. Also, we have our last day of school party on Friday, May 28th. Testing Week is here!!

Good luck to our students! They have worked hard and are ready to tackle the End-of-Level tests! Please remind them to get to bed early and eat a good breakfast. The next 3 tests are scheduled at 9:00 a.m. Please make sure your child is at school by the time the bell rings on those days. Thank you for your help with this!

*Our third grade program is scheduled for Friday, May 14th @ 2:30 in the school gym. The students are free to go home with you after the program if you choose. Since this is an informal program, students should just wear some nice school clothes that day.

We have a busy couple of months in front of us!! I will do my best to keep you informed of the upcoming events.

**Testing- Testing is a huge concern to us this year. If a concentrated effort is not made, we might not make our AYP goal. (Adequate Yearly Progress) This could eventually lead to the loss of Federal Funds for our school. The teachers at South Elementary are very concerned and have been all year. We have attended additional trainings and have incorporated new ideas to help build a better understanding of skills we are teaching. The biggest concern right now is the absenteeism of students throughout the year. If the student is not in class, they do not benefit from the instruction that is given while they are gone. South Elementary is also docked for the number of absences we acquire throughout the year, excused and unexcused. It is possible for us not to obtain our AYP goal strictly on number of absences.
While there are obvious times that a child needs to miss school, it is also important not to become complacent about attendance. I know we have had situations in our own class that have required a student to be gone. I appreciate the effort you have made to visit with me and make arrangements in those situations. Any extra help from home with this issue is greatly appreciated.

-Those that are involved with the science fair- Watch for info. coming home today to update you on what's going on. If your child signed up for the science fair, but has decided against it, please let me know.
-On Tuesday, March 30th, our class will be going to the Diamond D Arena for Farm Day. This is a district wide third grade activity. We will learn more about food, soil, 4-H, farm equipment, and farm animals. We will eat our lunch early that day and leave the school at 12:00 p.m. We will return by 2:45 p.m.

Math Groups- Measurement- The students are learning about the Customary and Metric measurements and when they are commonly used. At this point in the year, I am also doing a cumulative review of the material we have done all year.

Times Tables- Finishing up our pass-offs!

Social Studies- Geography- Study of the seven continents and map skills

Science- Introductory to the "Moon" unit.

Spelling- New words are listed in the right hand column. Test on Friday.

Vocabulary- New words also listed in the right hand column. Four of the oldest words on the list were removed. Test in 2 weeks on Friday, March 26th.

Keyboarding- One day a week to review skills.

We had several of our class members perform in the play "The Principal and the Pea". They did a wonderful job and I am so proud of them!!

The students have shown interest in taking a field trip to my house to see some chicks that I have hatched. I live quite close to the school, so we could easily walk there in 10 minutes. Since our schedule is so crazy right before Spring break( Science Fair/Assembly and the Farm Field trip), this party will be after lunch on Thursday, March 25th. I will go ahead and list the parents who have signed up to bring supplies for the party. If you are not signed up and would still like to donate, please send 12 plastic, candy-filled eggs to school by Wed, March 24th. I am also asking the people who signed up to bring Easter candy to bring 12 plastic, candy-filled eggs instead.

SEP Week-

This week:

Math- Multiplication test will be on Tuesday. Pre-test on Division on Wednesday(in our own class). New Math groups formed on Thursday.
Times Tables- The students are doing so well with their times tables! The times tables that should be passed off by now are 0's, 1's, 2's, 5's, 9's, 10's, 11's & 12's. A note will be sent home this week if your child is missing any. We are now starting pass-offs for 3's.
Vocabulary- Hopefully an extra week of study helped. We will test vocabulary on Friday.
Spelling- New list to the right. Test on Friday as usual.
Keyboarding- So sorry I forgot to send the homework last Friday. I will let the kids have a review day today and send home last Fridays homework. There are 20 lessons, so we are half-way through!

Welcome back from the long weekend! It has been a great experience for me to reflect on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The students and I had some great discussions about the Civil Rights Movement and the importance of recognizing each person as an important and equal individual.

This Week-

Math- Cont. Multiplication Groups
Times Tables- Finishing 12's and moving on to 3's.
Daily 5 Literacy- Read to Self, Read with Someone, Word Work, & Writing
Vocabulary- *No test this week, but I will be sending home the list to study for next week. Please notice that some words have been taken off. (By the way, I apologize for giving the students the wrong test last week. F.Y.I. that will be the same test they will be given at the end of next week.)

Our new block student is Marie Williams. She will be with us throughout the semester on Thursdays and Fridays. Welcome Mrs. Williams!

If you need a new code, Mrs. Smith can give you one in the office.(We are not allowed to send them home with the kids.)

Welcome back for another week!
Keyboarding- I'm happy to say that our Keyboarding went very well last week. Thank you for the extra help and support you have given at home!
Times Tables- About one-third of the class has passed off 12 times tables. We will finish those up this week. (Along with any others missed along the way.) Next we will work on 3's. Pass-offs will be next week.
Reading- Daily 5 continued: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work and Writing.
Interventions- Buddy Spelling, Mountain Language & Silver Burdett Guided Reading.
Math- New Chapter- Multiplication. The students have a great jump-start on this chapter!! They will be moving to new math groups today.
**A couple of weeks before this Christmas break, Mrs. Coonen started a "Picnic Lunch" group. Here is description of what this group is all about:
Introducing…Picnic Math!
What is Picnic Math?! In an attempt to have all of our students reach mastery level performance with the third grade math standards in the Utah Core, we are introducing Picnic Math. Picnic Math is a fluid math group that meets three times per week at lunchtime. Students will qualify to participate based on performance in math class and on assessments. Those students who are struggling with current concepts will come to lunch in the Resource room for a little extra practice over lunch. As mentioned before, the group is fluid; students will not know if they are coming until the morning of the group. If you have any questions, or if you do NOT want your child to ever participate, please call your student’s teacher or Sharon Coonen: 586-2850.

Hi! It's time to get back to school! Yay! I have missed you. I had a wonderful holiday, spending lots of time with my family and friends. I hope your holiday was great for you too!

Just a little heads-up as we head back to school on Monday, Jan. 4th. :
Our schedule will return to normal with the exception of the Vocabulary test on Friday. We will ease back into that the following week. Expect to see the usual spelling words on Monday. Also, please take notice of the keyboarding homework that will start coming home 4 days a week. (Keyboarding homework will begin on lesson #3, which will be on Thursday, Jan.7th.) Our first day in the computer lab will be on Monday, Jan 4th. Reading will be back to the 25 min. each school night along with the nightly homework Monday- Thursday. We will also resume our reading volunteers this week.

*I promised the students they could have a Christmas Show and Tell time. I have planned a time for the girls on Tuesday afternoon. (Jan.5th) The boys will take their turn on Wednesday right after lunch. (Jan. 6th) If your child chooses to bring sharing, please have them limit their selection to 1 item. Thank You!!

Wow! I can't believe our Winter Recess is almost here! We're still working on several projects up until Friday. We have been enjoying singing around the tree and also a wonderful performance from the Cedar High Jazz Band! I love this time of year, especially when I get to spend it with great kids like the ones I have in my class! Thank you to those of you who have given of your time and resources to help our class out. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

Looking forward: When we get back into the swing of things after the break, I would like to hit the times tables pretty hard. I have slacked a little with the students on their pass-offs, but hope to get caught up soon. Please practice the 12's with your child when you get a chance. Thanks!
Also, Keyboarding will be starting in January. The students will be bringing home keyboarding homework every night, with the exception of Wednesdays. I know it may seem a little overwhelming, but just hang in there. I think there are only 20 lessons.

Welcome back to school! I hope you are all feeling energized after that great holiday! The next three weeks are going to be filled with tons of fun and learning!!

Multiplication- We are starting 12's this week. We will still be passing off 9's & 11's.

Cursive- We are almost finished with all of our letters. After Christmas vacation, we will begin keyboarding.

Vocabulary- No new vocabulary words this week. We will continue studying the words that we have had up until this point. Next week we will have a new list. No list for the following week.

Welcome back to our short, 2-day week. These two days will be full of fun Thanksgiving activities that reinforce our curriculum. Our party will be the last hour on Tuesday. I hope you have a wonderful and safe vacation!!

Spelling- We will be working on a spelling packet this week, but we won't have a spelling test as usual.

Times Tables- Finishing up 11's and 9's. Get ready for 12's!!

Homework- We will only have Daily Language and Daily Math on Monday evening.

Home Reading- Only 2 nights of reading this week, for a total of 50 points possible. If your child is missing minutes from the last 2 weeks, they may make it up over this vacation. Please make sure your child brings back his/her reading record next Monday.

This Week-

Math- New groups will be formed this week to study the unit "Adding with Trading". This unit also includes adding money. You may see the last test on time come home. Like last time, you will be able to help your child on the missed items and turn it in for an improved score.

Daily 5- More of the same: Read to Self, Read with a Partner, Word Work(Spelling Packets), and Writing. The students will be composing a Thanksgiving story this week!

Cursive- We're on our way to finishing up all of our uppercase letters. Students are doing a fantastic job!

Science Unit- "Living and Non-Living"

Social Studies- "Native Americans"

Times Tables- Still working on 9's and 11's. after the Thanksgiving holiday, we will move on to 12's.

Homework- Continue nightly reading- 25 min./night (On school nights) Return reading record on Mondays.
Daily Math and Language- Monday- Thursday

Service Project-

We have an assembly planned on Thurs. Nov. 19 at 2:30 to kick off a service project in our school. We are joining efforts with some other schools to gather items for hygiene packs to be taken to a place in Mexico that has been devastated by natural disasters. The person who will be responsible to take the items to this city will be here on Thursday to tell us about the city and what happened along with telling us about the service project. She will also be giving us a letter to send home about the project. For this project we will be collecting the following items from Nov. 20 through Dec. 4th:
Soap (bars), toothpaste (tube), toothbrushes, wash clothes, standard combs, ziploc gallon bags.
After these are collected, they will be assembled into packs to be taken down to Mexico.

If you are able to help out with any of these items, that would be great. Thanks!

November 9th- 13th

Time is moving so fast!! The students are making some great progress in their reading and math skills!
What's going on next week:

Reading- Daily 5 continues. Along with "Read To Self" and "Read With a Partner", the students have been learning to write through using the Daily 5 techniques. I am getting a glimpse of the writing potential in all of my students. I am very impressed!

Interventions- The students who stay with me for interventions are working on Buddy spelling, Mountain Language, Intensive Phonics, and Guided Reading.

Math- Math groups are under way. We will be working on "Time" for the next week or so. The students seem to really be grasping the concept of how to tell time in different ways. They are still struggling a bit with the rounding concept (from last chapter), but we will review it over and over until it is solid in their minds.

Times Tables- We're so close to finishing our 11 and 9 times tables. We'll hopefully finish these up at the first of next week.

Science- We are starting our unit on "Living and Non-Living Things". The students will be participating in some fun activities in the next couple of weeks.

Social Studies- Still working on the "Iron County" unit.

We have two more full weeks of school and two days until Thanksgiving Holiday. I will be really pushing the students along in the curriculum during that time. Thank you for all of your help at home. It is making a huge difference at school!!

Welcome back to another week of school! I hope your Halloween was full of fun. Thank you to the parents who donated treats for our party. The students had a great time!

This week-

Math Groups- We are switching math groups on Tuesday. The unit that we will be studying is "Time". The students are still struggling a bit with rounding numbers from our last unit. If you get a chance, review rounding with your child as much as possible. I will also be doing a lot of review in class on this concept.

Times Tables- I am still in the process of passing the students off on their 11's. During this week, I would like to finish up 11's and 9's.

Spelling & Vocabulary- Refer to the list on the right margin. Test on Friday. A study guide has been sent home for practice. Thank you for your extra help at home!

Back to the Grind!!

I hope your 5 day vacation was wonderful!! I know that it is nice to be able to spend extra time with your kids, but it is also nice to be back in our school routine!!
As you have noticed, we have started vocabulary. Look for a study guide on Mondays or Tuesdays in order to help your child study at home. I give the vocabulary test along with the spelling test on Friday mornings. Also, a reminder on the test policy: If your child misses spelling & vocabulary tests, you may give them the test at home and send me a note with their score. I am not able to squeeze in extra tests after the fact, so this will really help me out. I can send a copy of the vocabulary test home for you to give your child.

Times Tables- We are getting ready to pass off 11's in the next few days. After that, we will pass off 9's. If you don't know the 9's trick, ask your child next week. They will be able to explain it to you!!

Daily 5- The students are pros at "Read to Self" and "Read to Someone"!! We are now concentrating on the "Writing" component of Daily 5. We cover our "Word Work" component in our spelling/vocabulary segment.

Math Groups- We are looking to finish up our "Place Value" & "Rounding" unit in the next week. At that point, we will switch groups and start working on "Time".

Reading Volunteers- All parent volunteers will start next week. (Oct. 27th, 28th, & 29th)

Thank you parents for the 100% attendance at SEP's!! You are wonderful supportive parents and I appreciate the support you have given me.
Just to let you know what's been going on:

-We just finished our IOWA testing. The students were good sports and did a great job.
-We are also finishing up our 5 times table pass-offs. We'll move onto 10's next week.
-In math groups we are studying place value. Please ask them to tell you what they have been learning. They are able to read really big numbers now!

What will be happening in the next couple of weeks:

-We will begin vocabulary next week. The students will get 4 words to study for the week. They will be tested on the 4 new words every Friday, along with their previous words. Watch for a study guide to come home to practice along with spelling.

-We will start working on rounding in our math groups next week.

Our year is well underway and I'm so happy with the students' progress in such a short time! I really appreciate the help and support you are giving your students at home. I can tell that the students have been studying their spelling lists and are doing their nightly reading. It sure makes a big difference at school! (Just a quick note about reading minutes- The reading assignment is 25 min. every school night. Normally that will be 5 nights a week, which will be 125 min. If we are on vacation for one of the school days, I do not expect reading for that night. So last week, for example, we only had four school days. When I recorded the reading times for last week, the possible amount of minutes was 100.)

School's In Session!!

We have had a wonderful first week of school! The students are adjusting well and doing great. We've even
started cursive and times tables! Hopefully they're telling you a little of what we are doing.

As I'm sure you've noticed, homework started this week. The students will bring home a blue half-page
of homework Monday-Thursday. We are completing some of it in class to hopefully avoid some frustration.
Our reading minutes have started this week also. Please encourage your child to read 25 minutes a night,
5 days a week. I will record reading scores on Mondays. Next week, we will send our first spelling list home.
Please go over the list with your child a couple of times a day.

Our Math rotations have started this week. I think the students will really benefit from having different
teachers with different strengths!

Next week, we will start our study on Heat and Light. There are many fun activities that the students
should really enjoy.

Starting on the week of Sep. 21st, all third graders in the district will be taking the IOWA reading assessment.
It is important for all students to be in attendance if possible. Also, I am just finishing up with Dibels testing.
We have a class of great readers! I will go over all testing with you at SEP's at the end of September.

I have failed to mention that we have a wonderful student teacher in our class. Her name is Monica Jackman and was actually our block student last semester. Mrs. Jackman has so many talents to share with our class. We're so glad you're here Mrs. J!!

What we've been up to!

As you already know, we have had the priveledge of having Tiffany Marchant teach art to our students. Her latest project has been paper mache llamas. We've had about 4 sessions of paper mache and we're almost finished! Her are some photos of the students while working on this project. (Some of them weren't too sure about getting their hands gooey, but they were good sports!)

Welcome Back after a few days off!
Kylie Lunt is the last "Student of the Week" for this school year. Kylie is 8 1/2 years old and loves all sports. Including Kylie, there are 5 kids in her family. Her favorite hobby is making leather bracelets with her grandpa. Kylie likes to eat tortellini and fettaccini alfredo. She likes the colors blue and orange. She also likes to watch "Twilight", "Lion King", and "Suite Life on Deck". Kylie looks up to everyone in her family and her favorite subject in school is art. When she grows up, she wants to be an artist, cook, and an author. Kylie is a great student and a friend to everyone!

We've been making some great headway at school these last few weeks. Along with our regular curriculum, we have been doing some extra math and language review in preparation for our end of level tests. The 3rd grades will do their testing starting on April 30th and will run until May 8th. Please do all that you can to have your children at school during these testing dates.

Farm Fieldtrip!

Last Monday we went on a farm fieldtrip out west of town. The students got to go to many stations to learn about different areas of agriculture. I think the kids had a ball.(Once they got accustomed to the smell!) Here are some photos:
