Those parents that signed up for the plastic eggs will be receiving a class list. If possible, I'd like to have each child's initials written on one egg each to keep it fair. If you have any questions, please let me know.

It's hard to believe this year is winding down! A couple of things I'd like to mention: First, our farm field trip is on Monday. I am missing a few permission slips. If your child has lost theirs, you can just send me a written note authorizing them to go with the class. Almost every year we've gone, it's been really cold. Please keep this in mind as your child picks out clothes for that day. Second,we will need to start securing some parent volunteers for the 3rd grade Battle of the Books which will be held on Wednesday, May 10th in the morning. If you could let me know over the next few weeks, that would be great! Last, we will be holding a class raffle during the last week of school. The students have earned "sticks" throughout the year and will have some left over from our store and the Mini-mall. They will be able to buy tickets with what they have left over. My goal is to have a nice prize for each student. I am asking for donations to make this happen. Some examples for the raffle include: games, water toys(no guns), $5 gift cards, craft kits, lego sets, etc.

It's definitely time for an update! This month is full of many fun activities and learning!

Here is the plan for each subject area:

Math: We just finished up our chapters on division and are now working on Chapter 8 which focuses on fractions. Mrs. Warren has taken over our math instruction and is doing a marvelous job!

Language Arts/Reading: Our CKLA units have been fascinating and fun. The units integrate science as well as social studies topics. Recently we finished our unit on the Vikings and  Space Exploration. Mrs. Davis has also incorporated art activities that go along with these units. Now Mrs. Warren is starting our unit on Native Americans.
Writing- Along with our new unit our students will be concentrating on informative writing. Editing skills are also practiced daily during bell work time.
Tier 1- I will continue working on our Tier 1 fluency and comprehension program using the CKLA readers.

Keyboarding: Keyboarding skills are practiced daily on our Chromebooks. Type-To-Learn is the program the students are using.

Upcoming Valentines Party: February 14th @ 2:30 p.m. Students are allowed to pass out Valentines if they have one for each student in the class. I will send home a list of students today.

Before the Christmas break I wanted to give you a heads-up on our plan for January. On January 4th, we will have a student teacher join our class named Mrs. Warren. She will be with us for a couple of months. She will make a great addition to our class!

What we will be working on:

Language Arts/Reading: We have just finished up our CKLA unit on heat and light. We will be starting unit 6 which focuses on the Vikings. Tier 1 reading is in full force and is allowing the students to go through the steps of Read-To/Basic queries, Echo Read/Deep Queries and a Partner Read. This method will be used throughout the remainder of the year and will greatly increase comprehension, fluency and accuracy.

Writing- The students have been on fire with their writing. They have written 2 opinion essays and 1 narrative in the last month. You will be amazed to see their work in their portfolios at the end of the year.

Math- We have reviewed all of our times tables and will now focus on review and recall of all of the facts. Go-Math Chapter 5 is finished and we're now in the middle of Chapter 6 which is working with division. 

Keyboarding- We are almost finished with our keyboarding lessons in class. Practicing and perfecting this skill will be worked on for the duration of the school year.

Science/Social Studies- We continue to cover these areas in our CKLA units. We are also supplementing with art projects with Mrs. Davis and the SUU art students that come each week. Mrs. Warren will also be doing some additional activities during our Space Exploration unit.

A big thank you for all of the gifts and cards during this season. All of our school supplies have been replenished. Your thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated! Merry Christmas! 

Our schedule is going on as usual at school in all of the subject areas. I just wanted to let you know of events that aren't in our usual schedule.

Keyboarding has started and the students are now learning correct finger placement on the keyboard. All required keyboarding will be done in class. I have homework available if any parents want it sent home for their child, although it's not required.

Times Tables- Breelle's dad has been helping with our times table pass-offs. Please have your child continue to practice their times tables. In class, we're now focusing on 7's & 8's. Thank you for your help with this!

It's time for an update! Thank you for coming in and meeting with me last week. I thoroughly enjoyed watching your children show you their progress and being the "teacher" for a few minutes. They are all wonderful students with unique strengths and talents.

The following is a list of things that are going on at school throughout the next month:

Reading/LA- We have been working through our first two CKLA units. We are just finishing up Unit 2 on Animal Classification. The CKLA also covers our social studies and science topics. This was the perfect unit to introduce Living/Non-living concepts. In addition to the activities in Unit 2, SUU Art Education students have also been visiting our class every week to include Art/Science lessons on Living/Non-living. The lessons have been well put together and the students have really enjoyed the time spent with them. We will start Unit 3 next week which is another informational unit on Body Systems.
Spelling- If your child misses a spelling test, please give your child the test at home and send it in for me to score. Also, if you feel your child needs to be challenged, please have them work on the additional words on the list that can be found in the family letter sent home at the first of the week.
Keyboarding- I'm sorry that we haven't been able to start keyboarding yet. We will start keyboarding in the next few weeks after SAGE tests finish up. Our class has almost completed all of the beginning of the year assessments. They have been troopers!

Math- We are starting Chapter 3 this week. Since Chapter 3 & 4 focus on multiplication and we've already worked a lot on that subject, we should be able to move along quickly. Times Table pass-offs have started and I'm now ready to have volunteers come in and help on Wednesday mornings at 8:50-9:30 if that's something you're interested in. Just email me and let me know.

Art/Music- Our art, music & P.E. classes continue as usual.

This is our first official blog post of the year! I will continue to send updates on the weekly homework and update the blog every few weeks.

Language Arts/Reading: CKLA Unit One focusing on Classic Tales is now finished and we are moving onto Classification of Animals. We had a wonderful time writing opinion pieces and will continue on with that in Unit Two. We will also be including our science topic of Living & Non-Living with this unit.

Next week we will start spelling. I have listed the words in the right column on this blog and will also include them on next week's homework. Please review the words with your child during the week as they will be tested on Friday.


Math- We will be finishing up Chapter one next week and will have the test next Tuesday. Chapter Two is "Interpreting Data" and will have the students working on different kinds of graphs.  We have also worked on the following times tables: 0's, 1's, 2's, 5's, 9's, 10's, 11's and 12's. I have had a few parents mention that they would like to help with the pass-offs. Starting in two weeks on Wednesday, September 28th, I would like to have parent volunteers come in from 8:50-9:30. If you would like to do this, please email me and let me know.  Also, acquiring a some flashcards for your child to practice would be very helpful. If you need me to print a set at school, let me know.

Art and Music: Students attend one 45 min. art session a week and two half-hour sessions a week.

Cursive/Keyboarding: Students continue to practice their lowercase cursive letters. Next week we will plan to start our Keyboarding unit.

Here we are, the last post of the year. I'm so sad to think of sending these students on, but they're ready. I will miss them!
This will be the plan from now until the end of the year:

Reading/LA- We have just finished up CKLA Unit 8 and are moving onto Unit 9 which teaches about the age of exploration. Columbus and many other explorers will be studied. We have really enjoyed our unit about Native American Explorers.
I'm sure you've noticed the new spelling lists that are being sent home. These lists are the former third grade spelling words and I've decided to give our students a chance to practice them. This week's list will include 2 of the challenge words from the CKLA spelling list. The test will be on Friday. We'll plan to have a spelling list this week and then 2 weeks after that.

Math- We have just finished up Chapter 11 and have started our last chapter of the book. This unit will discuss plane shapes, lines and angles. We will finish this up soon and start reviewing for the Sage Math Assessment.

Library- This week will be our last week to check out books. Please help your child gather their books to return in the next week or so.

Art/Music/PE- These classes will continue as usual.

Social Studies/Science are included in our CKLA Units. We had a blast exploring our space unit together!

Last week of school raffle: We have received many generous donations from two different moms. We have enough prizes for about 20 of the students. Our goal is to hit 30, one for each student. If you are able to donate, it is much appreciated!

It's time I update our blog! We have had some very eventful days and weeks. Last week we had our Drug Prevention Specialist LaMar Macklin speak with the students about the importance of staying drug free. The students love his lessons and are sad to have him go. We have also been working on our Sage Mid-year assessments. Our last one will be tomorrow and will be focused on writing.
We have also found that our 3rd grade students as a whole need to work on reading fluency. We have ramped up our reading instruction and we hope to see them all make leaps and bounds of progress. Any reading out loud at home will help us with this effort.

Here is an update in all of our subject areas:

Math- We have finished Chapter 8 and are starting into Chapter 9. Both chapters are focused on fractions. Thank you for your extra help at home with the Chapter 8 test. We are also still emphasizing times tables and are continually working on pass-offs.

Reading/Language Arts-Our CKLA has introduced some interesting and very fun topics for our students. Right now we are studying the Vikings. Ask your child about the story of Thor, Odin, Sif & Loki. We take every opportunity to address comprehension and present deep thinking questions. Along with these stories the students are studying spelling patterns, vocabulary, conjunctions and sentence structure/order. Previous phonics skills are continually reviewed.

Social Studies & Science- Our CKLA units are rich in the areas of social studies and science. Our last unit focused on light and sound. Supplemental activities are included when appropriate and necessary to address the core curriculum in both subject areas. This unit on the Vikings will turn our focus to social studies as the last unit focused on science.

Art- The students finished pieces that they painted under the table lying on their backs. They were completing them in the "Michelangelo, Sistine Chapel" style. They had a lot of fun learning techniques from this time period as we were discussing the Romans in CKLA.

Music- 3rd grade music curriculum continues to be taught. We don't have our second music teacher anymore, but Mrs. Hunt is covering until a new one is found.

P.E.- Miss Taylor is grateful for the nice weather and is having the students complete their P.E. requirements outside. They are able to practice various skills along with getting some great exercise.

Also, on February 16th, the 3rd grade is in charge of the Presidents Day Assembly. This will serve as our 3rd grade program for the year. Since we are unable to fit all of the student body and parents into the gym at the same time, we are scheduling a separate parents presentation that day at 10:30 a.m. The program will be about a half hour long.

I would like to express my appreciation to all of my awesome students and parents! We received so many donations for our class party and supplies for our classroom. A special thanks to Melanie Barker and Crystal Stott for organizing our Christmas party. Also, a special thanks to Lance Stott and Julie Leigh for contributing to our Third Grade Sing-Around-the-Tree. Lance played the guitar and Julie told the story, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas".

Math- We are finishing up Chapter 6 and will be testing this Wednesday. Chapter 7 will focus on Division Facts and Strategies.

Times Tables- Please continue practicing at home. We are continually working on pass-offs at school.

Keyboarding- Although we have finished our keyboarding lessons, we will continue practicing those skills a couple of times each week.

Language Arts/Reading- We have started Unit 4 which focuses on Ancient Roman Civilizations. This unit will cover numerous Language Arts Core Standards. Just a few of the goals we strive to reach include:
1. Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text
2. Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea
3. Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect
4. Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text
5. Use information gained from illustrations and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text
6. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
7. Decode words with common Latin suffixes.
Again, these are only a few of the standards addressed during this unit.
This also fits in well with our Social Studies Core Standards.

Science- Along with our Roller Coaster activity, we will be learning about Force & Motion for our science lessons.

Library/Music/P.E. continue as usual.

The holiday season is upon us! We have many fun activities planned, including a Thanksgiving party next Tuesday, November 24th. Our Party Chairs are Crystal Stott and Melanie Barker. They are planning a fun craft and activities. A special thanks to them along with our Halloween party organizers which were Brock, Kim Parson and Amy Barrick. They put a lot of effort into that party and the students had a ball!

Next Monday and Tuesday, all of the 3rd grade classes will be taking the SAGE Interim test. This is a tool that will help us determine where are students are at and what we need to do as teachers to help our students improve. This will most likely take the bulk of the time on each of these mornings. Don't plan on any homework these two days(other than the reading).

We have now started the second quarter. Our 3rd Grade Thriller was a blast! Thanks to all of you that helped us pull it off!
Here's our class schedule over the next few weeks:

CKLA- Spelling has started with our CKLA program! Word lists will come home on Mondays and the tests will be on Fridays. The students seems to like our Unit 2, Classification of Animals. Through this unit, we are able to cover our living/non-living science curriculum. Ask your child about the characteristics of living things.

Daily 5- Although we are heavily involved with the new LA curriculum, the students are still participating in Daily 5 Read-to-Self, Listening etc.

Math- Students are now working on Chapter 4 which continues on with Multiplication Facts. The students did extremely well on the Chapter 3 test and are excelling in their multiplication assignments. Thank you for your help with homework at home!

Times Table Pass-offs: We are still working on passing off our 0's, 1's & 2's. Thank you to the mothers that so kindly volunteer their time to help with this!

Keyboarding: The unit will conclude with lesson number 20. We are currently working on lesson 12. We will plan to finish up in 3 weeks.

Unit Study: Right now, our unit study is Living/Nonliving, which is taking place along with our CKLA Classification Unit as stated above.

Art: The students are finishing up their bird masks. We sure have creative students!

Music: Students have enjoyed learning dances and seasonal music each week.

It's hard to believe that soon the first quarter of school will be over. The class has settled in well and is proving to be wonderful! Here is the update of events over the next couple of weeks:

Third Grade Thriller- Those students who have reached 80% or above on their progress report will have earned the opportunity to go to our "Thriller" activity on Friday, October 23rd in the afternoon. We have some dance students from Cedar High coming to teach the Thriller dance to our students. The children will rotate through three different stations, all having to do with a Halloween theme. Those students that are not qualified will need to use the time to catch up their work.

CKLA- We are finishing up our "Classic Tales" unit and are moving onto a unit discussing the classification of animals. The students seem to really be enjoying the stories that go along with our daily lessons. They will also continue working on their word work through the skills strand of the lesson each day. Included in the writing portion of CKLA are many "Think, Pair/Share" topics and discussions. The students have responded to specific questions through writing and are currently exchanging their work with the other 3rd grade classes. Each child will have the opportunity to edit another child's work (anonymously) and have their work edited.

Framing Your Thoughts- We have continued working on sentence structure and predicate mobility this past week.

Math- We have just finished Chapter 2 and will start Chapter 3 today. Please watch for your child's test that is coming home today. Each child can have the opportunity to fix any missed problems and send it back for an improved score. Chapter 3 deals with Multiplication, which we already have a good handle on.

Times tables- We have started out pass-offs. If your child hasn't had a turn to pass off 0's, 1's, &2's, they will soon.

Keyboarding- We are not quite half-way through with our keyboarding lessons, but I'm encouraged to see the class doing so well. Thank you for your help at home!

Cursive- We have completed all of the lowercase letters and have moved on to uppercase.

Fall Break- Please note that Fall Break is next week. The students do not have school Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. (Oct.19-22) Please enjoy your break!

Welcome Back for another great school week! I am looking forward to SEP's next week and the chance to meet with each of you. Your child will be bringing home an appointment time that will hopefully work for you. If not, let me know and we'll work something out.

A couple of things I have remembered, but not told you about:
Snacks- Students are allowed to bring a healthy snack to school to eat at their morning break. They are not required to do this, but some students are very hungry at this time and have a hard time concentrating on their work.
Homework- When your child turns in homework, it should have a parent, sibling, grandparent etc. signature. The signature tells me that it has been checked over. I don't have enough time to check everything, and it is helpful if I can see it's already been corrected.
Library-We have had to change our library time from Thursdays to Tuesdays. This will start tomorrow.
Picture Day- This Friday, September 25th, will be picture day. Information has been sent home and more will be sent before Friday.

Classwork-

GoMath- We are finishing up chapter 1 and will take the test this week. Please watch for a review assignment that will be coming home. Mr. Rowley, our math specialist, has asked teachers to work the majority of the GoMath assignments in class rather than send it home for homework. When possible, I will follow his instructions. The majority of the math coming home will be drill and practice.

Times Tables- We will continue our times table study and look to start our pass-offs the week after next.  We will start with 0,s, 1's & 2's. Please study these times tables with your child on nights when no math homework is sent home.  After 2's, we'll move to 5's, 9's & 10's.

CKLA- We are progressing through our new L.A. program. The students have enjoyed classic tales and especially, "The Wind in the Willows". We have also reviewed core phonics skills and are working through our beginning of the year assessment.

Framing Your Thoughts- Our class is also working on sentence structure through our "Framing Your Thoughts" program.

Keyboarding- We have been able to get the students logged in and ready to start Keyboarding this week. Next week, the first homework will be sent home.

Unit Study (Science/Social Studies)- Right now, keyboarding will take up our "Unit Study" time. As soon as this program ends, we will be hitting science especially hard. We've been able to fit Social Studies into other subjects during the day.

Art/Music/P.E.- The students are enjoying art, music and P.E. each week. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings we have music, and Art is on Thursday mornings. P.E. is on Mondays @ 1:30.

I really enjoyed the "Me Museums"! Thank you for your help at home with them. Our August reading records are now due. Please help your child remember to bring them to school if they haven't already.

We will be having our first store this week. Thank you for the donations that have come in. The students love the store, but it can be quite an expense to do it on my own. Thanks again!
This first store, I am not imposing any grade requirements. After this one, each student will need  80% on their grades to participate. Every Thursday, I plan to have a student-teacher conference where I can help the students make sure they are where they need to be.

CKLA is going well and I am seeing that the students are benefitting from this program. Classic Tales is the topic for the first unit and The Wind in the Willows is the focus story, although we are discussing many stories.

Cursive- We have already learned 7 lower case letters. We will continue working on them in class.

Math- We are on the 2nd lesson of GoMath. Hopefully, you've noticed homework coming home. I plan to send math homework 3 days a week, but normally not on Fridays.
Times Tables- We have worked on Times Tables 0, 1, 2, 5, 10, & 11's.  Please quiz your student on these times tables. We will start pass-offs next month after the students have some time to practice.

Keyboarding- We have had to put off keyboarding because of some technical difficulties. I will let you know when we plan to start.

It has sincerely been a wonderful first two days of school. I have had the best time with your children! I also appreciate the donations that have been sent in and the volunteer help that you are willing to offer.

Almost every child turned their folder in today. That never happens! Thank you for your support with this. No GoMath or LA homework will be sent home throughout next week, but keep your eye out for the reading calendar. The required reading is twenty minutes each school night. They need to be turned in at the end of each month.

-Mondays: 12:30- 1:30: P.E.
-Tuesdays: 10:30- Music
-Wednesdays: 10:00-Music
-Thursdays: 10:00-10:45- Art

Only 4 more weeks of school- It's so hard to believe! The following is an outline of the schedule for the rest of the year:

Reading/Language Arts- The 3rd Graders benefitted greatly from the lessons presented by Mrs. Eves' regarding narrative writing. The students are now working on a narrative writing assignment about our unit of study, which is "A Trip to the Moon". We are also working on the other components of the Daily 5.
Battle of the Books- During our read-aloud time, I have been reading the books from the battle list. We also have several students that have read the whole list and received a treat from Mrs. Marriott.
The students still have a chance to earn this prize.
Reading Celebration- Our reading celebration is scheduled for next Friday, May 1st. The author focus of the celebration is Mo Willems. The point of the reading celebration is to celebrate all of the reading the students have done during the year, along with giving them an incentive to do even more reading during that week.
Math- You've probably noticed that we've been moving rapidly through these last couple of chapters. We have recently finished chapter 10 (Time, Length & Volume) and are midway through chapter 11(Perimeter & Area). Our last chapter, which is 12 and will focus on 2 dimensional shapes. Thank you for your support at home.
Times Tables- Please continue to work on times tables with your child. I will be passing them off until the last week of school.
Unit Study-We have started our "Moon Unit". The students are having a ball and already know so much about this subject.
Mini Mall- I have promised the students that they can give the "Mini-Mall" another shot. I have tentatively scheduled it for Thursday, May 14th in the afternoon. The students can bring items from home to sell to each other.
Store- Our store will be winding down in the next couple of weeks. After that, I will let the students use their "sticks" to purchase raffle tickets. If any of you are willing to send in a prize to be raffled, that would be great. Some ideas: $5 gift cards, books, bags, beach toys & craft sets. Thank you for your continued support this year to make school a fun place!
