Here is some important information for the next few weeks:
Battle of the Books Read-a-thon: On Monday, December 16th, the students have a chance to join Mr. Oldroyd in the gym for a Read-a-thon! In order to qualify for the Read-a-thon, the students must complete 2 book reports focusing on 2 battle books for their grade level. Several weeks ago, I sent home the 3rd grade list that highlights 4-5 books for your student to focus on. They are welcome to read more than that if they wish. Today, I am sending home two samples of book report outlines that the students may use for their books.
Reading Volunteers: Thank you to our reading volunteers! They are accomplishing great things with our students! We will not have volunteers come in next week because of the holiday. We will cancel volunteers that last week before Christmas vacation also.
Harvest Holiday: We will not be holding school next Wed., Thurs., or Fri. for our Thanksgiving break. We'll see the students back on Monday, December 2nd.
Spelling: No spelling list for next week.
Times Tables: Keep up the great work on times tables. We will continue passing the children off throughout the next several weeks.
Our Thanksgiving Party will be held next Tuesday, November 26th at 2:30 p.m. The following people have signed up for refreshments on that day. If you aren't able to bring your item, please just let me know and we'll work it out. Thank You!!

Newsletter 10/29 - 11/8
Here's our plan for the next couple of weeks:
Math- We just finished Chapter 3 and will be starting Chapter 4 today. Please watch for your child's test on the last Chapter. Generally, they did very well and are understanding the concept of multiplication. Chapter 4 is still dealing with multiplication with the focus on facts and strategies. I assume we will sail through this chapter just as we did the last. I am sending home 3 pages of homework that deal with practicing math facts. This homework will cover the whole week and will be due next Monday.
Times Tables- We have had some wonderful mothers in to volunteer their time for pass-offs. The students are working on their 5's and 10's right now. Next will be 11's and 12's.
Reading/Language Arts- We are continuing our "Framing Your Thoughts" program. By next week, the students will be ready to start their first writing assignment. We will have them write an informative paper on their perfect Thanksgiving.
Daily 5- We have built our class Read-to-Self stamina to 30 minutes. We are also continuing Word Work, Read-Aloud/Listening, and Writing as stated above.
Mountain Language- If you aren't familiar with our Mountain Language board, you will be surprised with the language skills your child is acquiring through this program. They practice phonics, sentence structure, analogies, and ABC order just to name a few.
Science/Social Studies: We are getting ready to tackle our unit on cultures throughout the world. Although we are studying various geography topics throughout the year, the current concept we will address is Social Studies Standard 2 Objective 1: Evaluate key factors that determine how a community develops. During this unit, we will discuss the elements of culture (language, religion, customs, artistic expression, and systems of exchange). We will also describe how stories, folktales, music, and artistic creations serve as expressions of culture. If you have first hand knowledge experience, and information about a specific culture, please let me know. It is fun to study this unit during the holiday season, as we are able to introduce many fun customs that are completely foreign to our students.
Art- The students are completing their weaving projects that tied in to our math base ten study. We can't wait to see what the next project is!!
We have been a little short-handed with our reading volunteers. If you are able to help out on Tuesday or Thursday mornings at 8:50- 9:30 am, please let me know.
Thursday we will have our Halloween Party. The party will take place from 2:30- 3:30. Here is the sign-up for those that are contributing:

Newsletter 10/7 - 10/18
Hello! Thank you for meeting with me last week. I found it very enjoyable and worthwhile!
Here is the information for the next couple of weeks:
Reading Volunteers: Looking at the calendar, Oct. 22nd will be the best day to start with volunteers because of Fall Break. If you are a Tuesday volunteer, please come in that day at 8:50 - 9:30 a.m. If you are a Thursday volunteer, please come on the 24th at that same time. Thank you in advance for your service!
Math: I'm so thrilled with the results of our Chapter 2 test. The students have worked hard and we are finally getting into the swing of this new math program. Thank you for being such great sports! We have started Chapter 3, which is titled "Understanding Multiplication". The students already have a great jump-start on this concept!
Times Tables: We have started our pass-offs. The students have been passing off 0's, 1's & 2's. Next will be 5's and 10's.
Mountain Math- We will start our "Math Wall" this week. This is another opportunity for the students to practice 3rd grade core skills.
Reading/Literacy: The students have been heavily engaged in our Daily 5 program. They are spending their time in "Read-to-Self", Word Work, Listening (Read-Aloud- Candy Shop Wars II), and Writing. Many foundational skills are being taught through our "Framing Your Thoughts" program, which I explained at SEP's. We have also incorporated our Guided Reading Groups on Mondays that include a "Close Reading". Each Close Reading will aid in furthering the students' comprehension skills.
Unit Study- Our current unit study will focus on "Living & Non-Living". In this unit, the students will classify living and non-living things in an environment. They will also describe the interactions between
living and nonliving things in a small environment.
Social Studies- Communities- We are trying to reschedule our fieldtrip to Parowan in the spring months when it is warmer. We will pick up where we left off at that time. In the meantime, we will introduce our geography unit.
Art- Mrs. Petersen is starting a new weaving project that aligns with our math unit- learning about base ten, arrays etc.
Music- The students will continue working on seasonal music along with many other skills.

Newsletter 9/23- 10/4
Hello!
The next couple of weeks are extremely busy at South Elementary! As your child may have told you, our fieldtrip on Thursday has been canceled due to the lack of available buses. We are looking ahead to see if we can find an open day to reschedule. In exchange, the students have a very exciting alternative activity. Today they will get to attend an assembly where they will meet Tyler Whitesides. He is the author of "The Janitor"series books.
My schedule is also crazy this week. I am missing a couple of days for teacher trainings and surgery for my son on Thursday. We have excellent substitutes that work well with 3rd graders and will continue on with our regular curriculum.

Newsletter 9/9 - 9/20
Hello! Sorry to have skipped the newsletter last week! Here is information that will cover this week and next. If you have questions throughout the two weeks, please feel free to contact me.
Math- Math is throwing the teachers for a bit of a loop. We are continually meeting and training on this new math program. This "Go Math" method is proving to be very beneficial to our students. It follows the Utah Core, which causes for greater concentration on fewer subject areas. As the students progress through the grades, each concept will have been taught more fully. Each subject is taught including many different methods to complete the task. It is really testing the teachers to think outside the box! Thank you for your time and patience while working on the homework. Just a suggestion- If the particular math assignment your child is working on is taking more than a half hour to complete, please just set it aside to complete at a later time. Since the students already have 25 minutes of reading each night, more than a half hour of other studies may frustrate them. The homework assignments are all due 2 days after they are sent home.
Spelling- Spelling words sent home on Monday, test on Friday. If your child misses school on a Friday, I just leave it up to you to give them the test at home. If you have lost the list, the blog will have the words printed there. Once your child has completed the test, just have them hand it in to me.
Cursive Writing- The students have been working on their cursive lowercase letters in class. They have completed their first ten and have had them graded. On the progress report, you will notice that there are 100 points possible. That is ten points per lowercase letter. If your child has not been completing the work in class, they have points deducted. The students are able to take the books home if they would like to make up the points.
Keyboarding- The students will be learning to keyboard in January, when we have consistent use of the computer lab.
Daily 5- We have started working on "Read-to-Self", Word Work, Listening & Writing. Read-to-Someone will come as the year progresses. We will begin a "big" writing project after we spend a few more weeks on "Framing Your Thoughts".
Language Arts- Weekly parts of speech lessons, focusing on: nouns, verbs & adjectives. Guided Reading groups including "Close Reading" lessons. Students are learning to pull information from the texts and make inferences independently.
Unit Study- We just finished our "Heat & Light" unit. Our new unit of study is from our Social Studies curriculum, which is focused on the study of Iron County. We have a field trip scheduled to Parowan on Sep. 26th, where we will visit many Iron County Historical sites. Please let me know if your child will be bringing a lunch from home. Otherwise, I will order them a school lunch for that day. The food choices are sunbutter sandwiches or a meat sandwich. We will leave the school at 9:00 a.m. and be back by 3:20 p.m. After we finish this social studies unit, we will alternate back to science. The next science unit is on "Heat & Light". We will continue alternating this way throughout the year.
Art- The students have been working on shadow puppets in preparation for their "Fables" plays. It is amazing to see the students' creativity at work!
Music- The students are getting music instruction twice a week. If you have questions about that curriculum, shoot Mrs. Leavitt an email and she will let you know what's happening for that week.
Book Orders- Due this Friday. It is so simple to order online. Please consider using this process if possible.

Newsletter 8/26 - 8/30
I hope you had a wonderful weekend! Here is our plan for this week:
Bell Work: When the students arrive each day, they have a half page of Language Arts and a half page of Math to complete. If the time is wasted, the Bell Work scores on the progress report will reflect it. If it becomes a chronic problem, I will be notifying you and a plan will be set up.
Math: We are still working on Chapter 1 in our Go Math program. The topic is "Addition & Subtraction". Rounding and Place Value are topics also included in this chapter. Thank you for your help on the homework. It will be so beneficial for the students to review the skills we learned in class each evening.
Times Tables: We will begin times table pass-offs next week. The students need to be studying their 0's, 1's, 2's and 5's. Here is the order we will be teaching the times tables: After 5's will be 10's, 11's, 12's, 9's, 3's, 4's, 6's, 7's and end with 8's. I know that this seems crazy, but there is a method to my madness. Let me know if you would like me to explain the process.

Soon we will move onto predicate enhancers and predicate mobility. Our Daily 5 system will be introduced this week and will include Read-to-Self, Read-to-Someone, Word Work(Spelling Packets), Writing and Listening. In a few weeks we will begin Mountain Language and mini lessons on the parts of speech.
Spelling: List number one will be sent home today. Test will be on Friday.
Unit Study- Our unit studies throughout the year will consist of Social Studies lessons and Science lessons. Right now, we are learning about heat and light. The students will be rotating through all the 3rd grade teachers classes during all of our unit studies. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Cursive- We have finished 6 lowercase letters and will continue working through our books. After all of the lowercase are finished, we will start the uppercase. If the students are having a hard time finishing the work in class, I will be sending it home.
Homework: Please review and sign your child's homework. I don't have time enough to check all of the homework everyday, so it is very helpful if I know you've already gone over it. The students will get a small reward periodically when they bring back their folder and signed homework. Also, it is crucial that the students bring their folders back and forth everyday. If they have lost their school folder, any folder will work as a substitute.
Art: The students attended art class for the first time last Friday. Mrs. Petersen has created art lessons that go along with our heat and light unit. The students will love making shadow puppets and performing plays based on the book Fables!
Music: The students go to music on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We now have two "Mrs. Leavitts"! Melissa Leavitt's daughter-in-law is teaching half of the music classes during the week, while Melissa is working on the formation of the new childrens' community choir. They will be receiving the same excellent instruction as usual.

August 19th- 23rd
We made it through our first few days of school! The students have transitioned very well and are already working hard. Here are the items we have worked on so far:
Cursive- We have already finished learning to write cursive letter "i" and "t".
Times tables- Working on 0, 1, & 2. Flashcards will be coming home this week. Please spend 10 - 15 minutes a night on the times tables. Next week, I will start passing off each childs' times tables.
Reading- Reading charts are being sent home today in folders. Please have your child read 25 minutes every school night. Charts need to be handed in on Sep. 2.
Spelling- I've decided to hold off another week before sending spelling home. I don't want to overwhelm the students!
Homework will begin next week. Watch for a homework packet next Monday.

Cursive- We have already finished learning to write cursive letter "i" and "t".
Times tables- Working on 0, 1, & 2. Flashcards will be coming home this week. Please spend 10 - 15 minutes a night on the times tables. Next week, I will start passing off each childs' times tables.
Reading- Reading charts are being sent home today in folders. Please have your child read 25 minutes every school night. Charts need to be handed in on Sep. 2.
Spelling- I've decided to hold off another week before sending spelling home. I don't want to overwhelm the students!
Homework will begin next week. Watch for a homework packet next Monday.
